What is Kata-e-zome?
Kata-e-zome is one of Japan's representative dyeing techniques, where patterns are carved into a stencil (called shibu-gata) made from starchy paper, and then dye is applied to fabric or washi paper using a resist paste. This traditional craft symbolizes the beauty of Japan, known for its intricacy and elegance, and has a long history that continues to resonate today.
In this workshop, we are honored to welcome Masayuki Isa, a Kata-e-zome artist and Japanese painter, as the instructor to provide you with a special experience.
Theme of the First Session: Katsushika Hokusai’s "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji: The Great Wave off Kanagawa"
Participants will use a Kata-e-zome stencil inspired by the famous ukiyo-e woodblock print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, and carefully layer colors with a brush to create a beautiful piece. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the vivid colors that seem to emerge from the depths of washi paper, as well as the rich technique unique to Kata-e-zome.
We invite you to join this special experience.
